We sat down with Jennie to learn more about why she became a nutritionist, what she loves about the outdoors, her favourite hiking snack, and more.

Tell us a bit about yourself: who you are and what you do

My name is Jennie and I am a lover of all things nature, adventure and movement. I've always had a burning passion for health and wellness, mostly in the form of competitive sports and creating my own delicious recipes.

I am a Holistic Nutritionist here in Vancouver, where I do my absolute best to meet people where they are at and support their wellness journey - whatever that means to them. I firmly believe that every body is beautifully unique and will require a different approach to health. This truly lights me up and gives me a challenge - who wants to fit into a cookie cutter box of "health" anyway?

AGREED! WHY DID YOU BECOME A HOLISTIC NUTRITIONIST?

My drive towards becoming a holistic nutritionist was originally fuelled by my innate passion for health and sustainability - but was later strengthened by health problems both personally and within my family. I wanted to learn how to take back my own health and empower myself to embrace the wonder and beauty of my own journey back to wellness.

Once being immersed in the field and all of the information, my WHY also transformed into a passion for education around health and wellness and showing people that there are other ways to approach it.

amazing! we’re excited to have you share some of your knowledge with us on october 16. what do you love about being outside?

Since a young age, I've been in love with nature. It has always been a source of solitude and a place where I am able to quiet my mind and reconnect with myself. I really got into hiking when I lived in the Rockies. When you live completely immersed in the Rocky Mountains, it's almost a shame to not hike up them. There was also an immense feeling of strength and empowerment that comes along with climbing a mountain, which can be carried over into our everyday activities and lives.

we can relate to everything you just said.

what’s one of your favourite recent outdoor adventures?

One of my favourite recent hikes is definitely Mount Strachan! It was a last minute decision that turned out for the best. It was so different in terms of terrain and technicality that it kept us constantly challenged and excited for what was coming next! There was quite a bit of climbing and scrambling involved which kept it interesting the whole time.

NICE JOB ON COMPLETING THAT. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO EAT ON HIKES?

My favourite snack to eat while hiking are my homemade energy balls. They make the perfect snack at any stage in your hike (pre, during and post) because they are so well balanced and nutrient dense. They have a great ratio of carbs, fats and proteins that will give you lots of instant energy without making you feel too heavy or "bogged down.” They are also super versatile too - so you can always mix them up and cater them toward your own taste buds and accessible ingredients!

THOSE SOUND DELICIOUS. IF SOMEONE WANTED TO IMPROVE THEIR NUTRITION WHILE HIKING, WHAT ARE 3 TIPS YOU CAN OFFER?

  1. Quality over quantity: if you are hiking, you probably want to limit the amount of weight you are carrying with you. Focus on bringing smaller, more nutrient dense snacks and meals - you will get way more out of your fuel without the excess weight.

  2. Constant hydration: If we are thirsty or not drinking enough water, fatigue can creep in much faster and your muscles will feel tired much faster.

  3. Focus on packing and eating well-balanced foods: a good ratio of macro nutrients will make sure to supply your body with all it needs and that you are full, satisfied and fuelled!

GREAT TIPS! what’s next on your hiking bucket list?

Definitely to conquer the Panorama Ridge and Black Tusk multi-day route next summer. This season, before it gets too cold and the snow sets in, I will hopefully make it to Garibaldi Lake or Joffre Lakes. There is just something so magical and peaceful about the colour of the lakes and the vastness of the mountain range surrounding them that bring me back to my inner wisdom and gratitude.
